Have you ever come across someone suffering from male pattern baldness (androgenetic alopecia)? It is common for most men to witness this baldness pattern at some point in their lives. In a recent survey 64.4% Indian males suffered from some degree of baldness. Here is more on this common discussion, followed by our role in helping you fight this malady.

A quick look at the causes of male pattern baldness

Male pattern baldness or androgenic alopecia has the following underlying factors:
Genetics: You might exhibit male pattern baldness if your family history indicates for the same.
Hormonal imbalance: Most frequent cause for this baldness pattern is a hormonal imbalance. Androgens are male hormones, which play a pivotal role in regulating the hair growth cycle. As you suffer from this type of baldness, your hair growth regulating cycle weakens, thereby shrinking your hair follicles.
Medical conditions: At times, you are at high risk for male pattern baldness if:

  • You are suffering from certain types of cancers
  • You are undergoing chemotherapeutic sessions
  • You are undergoing thyroid medications, or
  • If you are consuming anabolic steroids

Other medical conditions for male pattern baldness include:

  • Prostate cancer
  • Diabetes
  • High blood pressure or Hypertension
  • Stress
  • Iron deficiency
  • Excessive secretion of vitamin A
  • Malnutrition
  • Constant use of blood thinners or anticoagulants

Available treatment options

Male pattern baldness is treatable with the following options:Medication
With USFDA’s approval, two drug treatments are prominent to rectify the male pattern baldness:

a. Minoxidil

Or Rogaine. Available as over the counter medication, you can simply apply it on to your scalp. However, prior medical consultation is essential for a proper prescription. With minoxidil, you may require 3 to 6 months for your hair to grow back.
Although minoxidil is the second best treatment option available to date, do not forget its adverse effects, which may include:

  • Skin problems
  • irritation
  • itching
  • contact dermatitis
  • hives
  • sensitivity
  • swelling

b. Finasteride

This an oral medication and is to be taken under strict medical supervision. It acts on the male hormone called dihydrotestosterone, which plays an active role in shrinking your hair follicles. Adverse effects include:

  • Skin rashes
  • Diarrhea
  • Headache
  • Dizziness
  • Lips, tongue or face swelling
  • Abdominal pain
  • Tenderness or enlargement of breast tissues

If you are uncomfortable with medications, go ahead with shampoo treatment.
You can either opt for Nizoral (2 percent Ketoconazole) or Head and Shoulders (1 percent Pyrithione).
However, shampoo treatments are less effective in comparison to medications. There effect may be negligible. It is advisable to consult your surgeon before starting with any treatment regime.

2. Last option

Hair transplants are the last option when nothing works well for you. At Darling Buds, we care for your hair as much as you do yourself. Since 2009, we have been dedicating our efforts entirely to this FUE hair transplantation technique.

How do we do it?

We usually follow the FUE hair transplantation process. This technique involves utilizing hair grafts from some other region of your body for transplanting them to the targeted area.
Dr Bhatti and our well-qualified and well-experienced team of nurses, technicians and anesthetist will take good and professional care while you are with us at Darling Buds.
Here are the two methods that we may try out, depending on your baldness condition:

  • Strip grafting: SCut out a strip of skin from your donor region (mostly from your head itself) which is abundant in hair growth. We will then graft this strip on to the targeted bald area. (This procedure has been abandoned today by most clinics including ours)
  • FUE Hair grafting: We can transplant individual hair grafts, which limits the concern of visible scarring.

In both the processes, we make sure that you face minimum inconvenience and get maximum outcomes in terms of hair regrowth.
